WICHITA FALLS, Texas - East Central freshman Carol Blanton tied for second place and teammate Ashley Cardwell tied for 16th as the Lady Tigers finished in fifth place in the team standings at the Midwestern State University Invitational on Tuesday at the par-72 Champions Course.
Blanton, after firing a 4-over 76 in Monday's opening round, shot an 81 on Tuesday and finished in a runner-up tie with West Texas A&M's Mollie Peterson, who posted two-round scores of 80-77, as the pair ended up at 13-over apiece for the tournament. They finished three strokes off the medalist pace set by Central Oklahoma's Erica Bensch, who posted a 76 on Monday and followed up with a 78 on Tuesday to finish at 10-over for the event. Blanton posted three birdies in the tourney on her way to earning the runner-up finish. Meanwhile, Cardwell was steady in the event, posting pars on 21 holes through the two rounds as she recorded an 82 on Tuesday after finishing with an 83 on Monday to go 21-over for the event. Also for ECU, Emily Wharton tied for 34th place after shooting back-to-back rounds of 85. Teammate Whitney McDaniel tied for 45th after posting a 93 on Monday and firing an 82 on Tuesday. Megan Dutton was 55th after a 90-94 and Theresa Bullard, playing unattached, shot a 99-93 to tie for 58th place. West Texas A&M, on the strength of four top-10 finishes, captured the team title with a two-round score of 635, followed by host Midwestern State (643), Central Oklahoma (651), Newman (654), ECU (664), Nebraska-Omaha (665), Dallas Baptist (666), Northwood (667), Texas A&M-Commerce (689) and Cameron (691).
